DIET MYTH #8: COFFEE IS BAD FOR YOU Coffee has been scrutinized by companies selling coffee substitutes for close to one hundred years. Even today, many of the negative things you may believe about coffee likely came from ad campaigns in the 1920s. Back then, Post Cereal sold a burnt-grain coffee substitute called Postum and advertised that it was healthier than coffee. This is a myth that still persists even though Postum has been degraded to barely classifying as a food product. The studies on coffee and health go back and forth. Some studies show health benefits while others show negative impacts. This might seem confusing, but the reason is simple. Bad coffee is bad for you, and scientists don’t particularly value what types of coffee they use for these studies. They don’t control for processing methods or the source of the beans. The vast majority of studies use instant coffee from the grocery store, which is shown to be higher in mold toxins than brewed coffee. There isn’t value in the quality of the beverage. The studies that show negative effects from drinking coffee never control for the presence of mold toxins in coffee. The mold toxins themselves could explain many of the negative effects found in these coffee studies. When you eliminate the coffee mold and look at the whole picture, it’s clear that coffee is more of a “superfood.” Study after study has shown that coffee, even with mold, improves focus, memory recall, and performance. It also provides large amounts of polyphenols that feed good bacteria in the gut. Red wine and chocolate are famous for their polyphenol content, but they pale in comparison to coffee. Coffee has powerful antioxidants and is the number one source of dietary antioxidants in the average U.S. diet. Coffee also contains powerful thermogenic properties, meaning that it stimulates fat loss and even helps build muscle by repressing a substance in your body called mTOR. mTOR plays a major part in increases protein development in your muscles, but when overstimulated it can produce cancer cells.
When you mix low-toxin coffee with the right fats, you get an amazing drink that eliminates hunger and cravings, lights up your brain with a more efficient energy source, and helps you lose weight, build muscle, and increase focus and performance—all without the negative effects of moldy coffee. Bulletproof Coffee is a core part of the diet. I have been drinking it for breakfast every morning since I learned about it in April of 2017, and I can’t wait for you to try it!
