It is May in Teaxas and the heat has arrived!! Take care of your skin from the inside out. I take hydrolyzed collagen in my coffee every morning, but supporting collagen with other foods is important too. Here is my Top 10 Collagen Supporters list.
Vitamin C - guava, oranges, red bell peppers
Vitamin C is used in nearly every step of the collagen formation process. If you have a vitamin C deficiency you could develop scurvy. In scurvy, the body literally falls apart as collagen is broken down and not replaced. Tendons shrivel and weaken, and joints fall apart as their cartilage withers away.
Omega 3 - fish, avodaco, egg yolks
Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties and vitamin A to help hunt down free radicals. They both can prevent loss or break down of collagen.
Lycopene - grapefruit, papaya, tomatoes
Lycopene can prevent the breakdown of collagen by blocking the collagenase enzyme
Vitamin a - beef, fish, carrots
Vitamin A helps to even skin tone, reduce fine lines and normalize cell turnover.
Proline - gelatin, Butter, cheese
By increasing the availability of this amino acid, it may be possible to slow down the aging process and enhance skin health.
Taurine - scallops, chicken & turkey (dark meat)
Taurine works as an antioxidant, expands cells, reduces inflammation, and aids in the creation of new collagen. This helps significantly in wound healing.
Lipoic acid - leafy greens, broccoli, organ meats
Lipoic acid increases a cells ability to replenish itself with more nutrients and excrete wasteful toxins.
Sulfur - garlic, onions, Brussels sprouts
Sulfur can improve acne by resolving scars, removing toxins from the skin and creating healthy new skin cells.
Vitamin E - nuts, seeds, sweet potato
Vitamin E is an antioxidant. Its main function in skin care is to protect against sun damage.
Copper - cashews, kale, cocoa powder
Copper activates an enzyme called lysyl oxidase that's required for collagen development. It helps to keep your bones, heart and blood vessels healthy.
